KUALA LUMPUR: Men's pair Kang Khai Xing–Lok Hong Quan were the only local sole survivors at the Malaysia Super 100 after advancing to the semi-finals on Friday.
However, mixed doubles Liew Xun–Nicole Tan and women's doubles Dania Sofea Zaidi–Tan Zhing Hui fell in the quarter-finals at the Indoor Arena, EduCity Sports Complex, in Iskandar Puteri, Johor.
Khai Xing–Hong Quan were leading Taiwan's Chen Bo-Yuan–Lu Ming Che 3-0 in the opening game when their opponents retired.
They will face either Taiwan's top seeds He Zhi Wei-Huang Jui Hsuan or South Korea's Jin Yong-Jo Song Hyun for a place in the final.
Khai Xing–Hong Quan will now shoulder the hosts' remaining hopes of winning a title at the tournament.
In the mixed doubles, Indonesia's Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto–Melati Daeva Oktavianti proved too strong for Liew Xun–Nicole, winning 21-13, 21-6.
Liew Xun said: "The Indonesian players were more experienced, and we found it difficult to settle into our rhythm because they were able to dictate the pace of the game. We need to be more patient and control our emotions better on court."
"I think our weaknesses were our rotation and the quality of our shots. These are areas we need to improve significantly if we want to compete against players at this level."
Nicole said: "The wind conditions on each side of the court also played a part, while our opponents were more experienced and able to maintain their rhythm. As this was our first time together, our communication can still improve."
Malaysia's women's doubles challenge also ended when South Korea's Lee Seung Hee–Park Min Ji defeated Dania Sofea–Zhing Hui 21-14, 21-11.
