ORION, Bataan – The Bataan chapter of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines remains opposed to the national government’s plan to rehabilitate and eventually operate the mothballed 40-year-old Bataan Nuclear Power Plant in Morong town.
Orion town Mayor Antonio Raymundo, Jr., LMP Bataan Chapter president, in an interview on Thursday said the stand of the mayors’ league will remain a “no to BNPP operations.”
Raymundo said the league is pointing to a resolution passed on June 8, 2023, opposing the plan to operate the mothballed plant due to “insurmountable financial cost and safety reasons.”

The resolution, which had been retransmitted to President Marcos Jr., argued that the BNPP structure could be converted into a data center or a cloud-computing facility to “generate income.”
The league said municipal mayors were alarmed by a BNPP rehabilitation plan being pushed without prior consultation with the local governments that have jurisdiction over the controversial facility.
In Morong town, the Nuclear Free Bataan Movement held a lightning rally on Thursday following a site tour for a group of investors at the four-decade-old structure.
This development alarmed anti-nuke advocates when the Department of Energy hinted that the nuclear facility could be up for sale to nuclear energy investors./coa
