Xabi Alonso has confirmed Emiliano Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium after being taken off on a stretcher during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Everton.
The goalkeeper was hurt after colliding with two Everton players while coming to clear a free-kick midway through the second half and was replaced by Mike Penders following lengthy treatment.
“As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious and right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests,” Alonso said.
“So let’s see, but that’s what I know so far. We need to wait.
“Hopefully it won’t be too bad, but we need to wait at the moment.”
Alonso also confirmed Malo Gusto missed the game through illness, while Pep Chavarria will undergo tests on Sunday after suffering an issue in training on Friday.
There was better news on the pitch, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals in the victory.
“Winger, wing-back, attacking position, defending, he can do many things,” Alonso said on the Portugal international.
“Today he’s done well, he’s so competitive, he’s a threat against any full-back when he’s on the last line or in between.
“He connects well with the player around him.”
