- Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse dropped the revelation during President Ruto's working tour of Ukambani
- Mutua served two terms as Machakos governor before term limits blocked a third bid in 2022
- Mutua's Maendeleo Chap Chap party recently resolved to field candidates across all elective positions in 2027
Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua is reportedly setting his sights on the Machakos Senate seat ahead of the 2027 General Election, if the pronouncement by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse is anything to go by.

Mutuse made the disclosure on Saturday, October 24, while accompanying President William Ruto on his working tour of the Ukambani region.
Speaking at a stop in Machakos, the legislator acknowledged his personal history with the Cabinet Secretary before sharing what he described as whispers circulating about Mutua's political intentions.
"For those who know, Alfred Mutua used to be my boss. I worked for him here (Machakos)," Mutuse told the gathering.
Mutua was Machakos County’s first governor. He was elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017, before term limits barred him from seeking a third term in 2022.
Kenyan governors, like the president, are limited to two five-year terms.
Mutuse turned to talk of Mutua’s next move, saying he had heard that his former boss was interested in the Senate seat
"I've heard rumours that he wants to become the Senator for Machakos. I've heard whispers, should I say it? Come on, should I say it?" Mutuse said, before posing the question directly to the crowd:
"So, if this Mutua comes forward as a candidate for Senator, will you give him your support?" he posed to the crowd which affirmatively responded.
The Machakos Senate seat is currently held by Agnes Kavindu of the Wiper Party, led by Kalonzo Musyoka. Wiper commands significant support across much of the Ukambani region.
Mutua is the founder and leader of Maendeleo Chap Chap, the party on whose ticket Mutuse won his parliamentary seat.
Mutuse is currently the party's sole MP in the 13th Parliament.
The party laid out an ambitious 2027 electoral strategy following a National Governing Council meeting on August 12.
It announced plans to field candidates for every elective position, ranging from MCA to governor, while pledging to support Ruto's re-election bid.
The party also launched a membership drive, planned a nationwide tour by Mutua to bolster its structures, and opened its doors to former members who had defected, setting a return deadline of September 15, 2026.
Mutua has not publicly confirmed any intention to contest the Senate seat.
It also remains unclear whether he intends to resign from the Cabinet, a legal requirement for public officers who wish to seek elective office ahead of an election.
