PASIR MAS: A routine patrol yesterday turned into a frightening encounter for a 41-year-old General Operations Force corporal when a suspected drug syndicate member rammed his vehicle in an attempt to evade arrest.
The corporal, who has served in the police force for 14 years, said he and three colleagues from the GOF's Ninth Battalion were patrolling Jalan Kedai Lama in Rantau Panjang at about 2pm when they spotted a suspicious car.
"We tried to overtake the Toyota Corolla Altis, but the driver suddenly rammed our vehicle.
"Both vehicles sustained severe damage to their front sections," he said.
Despite the impact, the corporal and his colleagues immediately got out of their vehicle and approached the suspect's car.
They managed to pull the 35-year-old suspect out before he could flee.
However, the incident left the corporal with a fractured right arm, an injury he initially did not realise was serious.
"About half an hour after the incident, I started feeling swelling in my right arm.
"I was then taken to hospital, where doctors confirmed that my arm was fractured," he said.
His right arm was put in a cast yesterday evening, and he was discharged from Lati Hospital last night.
The father of a two-year-old daughter said this was the first time he had been involved in such an incident in his nine years serving with the GOF.
Despite the painful experience, he remained focused on his duties, describing the incident as an unexpected risk that came with police work.
The 35-year-old suspect was arrested and remanded for four days from today.
