As the festive spirit of Durga Puja engulfed Agartala in a wave of devotion and celebration, Kunjaban Sporting Union, one of the city's most celebrated and enduring puja organisers, marked its 59th year of Durga Puja with an extraordinary theme that blended innovation, artistry and environmental consciousness. Aptly titled “Kancher Mayajal” (The Illusion of Glass), the pandal emerged as a dazzling masterpiece, transporting visitors into a magical realm sculpted almost entirely from discarded and unused glass materials.
In a remarkable display of imagination and craftsmanship, what would ordinarily have been considered waste was transformed into a glittering spectacle of beauty and elegance. Countless pieces of unused glass were meticulously assembled to create an enchanting structure that sparkled under changing lights, captivating devotees and revellers alike. The concept not only delivered visual grandeur but also conveyed a powerful message about recycling and the creative possibilities hidden within discarded materials.
The ambitious undertaking was the result of nearly two and a half months of relentless effort, during which around 25 dedicated workers toiled tirelessly to bring the vision to life. Working painstakingly through long days and nights, the artisans and labourers transformed heaps of discarded glass into an architectural marvel, with every reflective surface and intricate detail bearing testimony to their commitment and skill.
Speaking about the project, Club Secretary Rajat Das had said that the primary objective was to attract a large number of visitors through a unique and visually striking theme, continuing the club's long-standing tradition of presenting memorable Durga Puja celebrations. The organisers believed that the innovative use of discarded glass materials would offer visitors an experience unlike any other while reinforcing the importance of sustainability through art.
With an investment of nearly Rs 40 lakh, the organisers had left no stone unturned in ensuring that the festival stood out as one of Tripura's most impressive Durga Puja attractions. Every aspect of the celebration, from the idol and architecture to the lighting and decorative elements, was carefully planned to create a seamless blend of spirituality and artistic excellence.
The project also showcased the expertise of renowned craftsmen from West Bengal. Acclaimed idol-maker Ashit Pal had been entrusted with sculpting the divine image of Goddess Durga, while Tapas Pal had supervised the elaborate pandal construction and decorative works. The illumination of the entire complex, a crucial element in bringing the glass-themed wonderland to life after sunset, had been designed by Bablu Baruah, whose creative lighting arrangements added another layer of magic to the spectacle.
The grand pandal was opened for visitors on October 13, with former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura and Governor of Maharashtra Jishnu Dev Varma inaugurated the attraction. The inauguration added prestige and significance to an event that had already generated considerable excitement among puja enthusiasts.
Beyond its artistic splendour, Kunjaban Sporting Union had also remained committed to the spirit of social service that lies at the heart of Durga Puja celebrations. During the festive days, the club had undertaken several welfare initiatives, including the distribution of clothing among underprivileged families. Arrangements had also been made for the distribution of Mahabhog among local residents, ensuring that the celebrations reached beyond the confines of the pandal and touched the lives of those in need.
More than just a Durga Puja attraction, “Kancher Mayajal” had stood as a shining example of how creativity, devotion and social responsibility could come together to create something truly extraordinary. Through its shimmering glass-crafted dreamscape, painstaking craftsmanship and commitment to community welfare, Kunjaban Sporting Union once again reaffirmed its reputation as one of Agartala's most iconic Durga Puja organisers, offering visitors a celebration where discarded fragments were transformed into dazzling symbols of beauty, faith and hope.
