Paris chaos goes viral as tourists film smoke and elderly couple are stripped and robbed

Paris has a reputation for romance, candlelit dinners and dreamy views along the Seine. But it is rather harder to sell the City of Love when tourists are sailing past a huge cloud of black smoke, filming the scene on their phones instead of taking the usual holiday snaps. That was the extraordinary sight captured aboard a tourist sightseeing boat in Paris, where passengers watched smoke rising above the riverbank as their cruise continued.

The footage has appeared online as the French capital deals with a weekend of serious unrest, with shops ransacked, vehicles set alight and police clashing with demonstrators. However, the precise source of the fire shown in the boat footage has not been independently confirmed, so it is not yet clear whether it was directly connected to the violence.

Paris wakes up to scenes of destruction

Saturday, October 17, was marked by demonstrations across France over the rising cost of living and concerns about school conditions. While many people took part in peaceful marches, violence broke out in several cities, including Paris. In the capital, groups of masked people smashed shop windows, looted businesses and set fire to street furniture and vehicles. The Place de la République and surrounding streets were among the areas affected, leaving broken glass, damaged shopfronts and burnt debris for residents and workers to face the following morning.

The scale of the damage was clear on Sunday, when shopkeepers returned to find premises broken into and stock stolen. Some businesses had suffered extensive damage, with owners left to assess their losses and work out how to secure their shops. The unrest also spread beyond Paris. In Limoges, flames engulfed the city’s historic town hall, badly damaging the 19th-century building. Other cities, including Marseille and Lyon, also saw violence and damage to public property

Among the most disturbing footage to emerge from the unrest is that of an elderly couple, both aged over 80, who were stripped and robbed near Place de la République. They were left almost naked in the street after attackers stole their belongings and clothing. The incident has added to the outrage over the violence, which has gone far beyond damage to shops and public property. For tourists aboard the Seine cruise, the smoke rising over the city offered a very different view from the one usually found on postcards and travel brochures.

Thousands arrested after clashes

The demonstrations brought hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets across France. Organisers estimated that 800,000 had taken part, while the Interior Ministry put the figure at 550,000. But the peaceful marches were overshadowed by looting, fires and clashes involving groups of demonstrators and police. By Sunday, authorities had reported more than 2,000 arrests nationwide, while hundreds of police officers, firefighters and other security personnel had been injured during the unrest. Figures varied between reports as the situation developed.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned those responsible for the violence and said people who had damaged property would be held accountable. The unrest has also intensified political tensions in France, with arguments over the government’s response and the reasons behind the protests.  The protests were driven by anger over the cost of living and concerns about public services, including conditions in schools. Yet the damage caused by looting and arson has left residents and business owners dealing with the immediate consequences.

A very different view of the City of Love

The sightseeing boat video has attracted attention because of the contrast between the passengers’ holiday activity and the smoke hanging over the city. A cruise along the Seine normally offers views of some of Paris’s best-known landmarks, with tourists photographing bridges, riverside buildings and the city’s famous architecture. In this footage, mobile phones are still out, but the subject is a plume of smoke rather than another holiday memory.

It is important, however, not to confuse the striking images with proof that the whole of Paris was burning. The video shows smoke rising in the distance, but the exact location and cause of the fire remain unverified. Meanwhile, the clean-up continued on Sunday, as workers cleared debris from affected streets and businesses began assessing the damage. Further unrest also broke out in parts of Paris later in the day, with police again moving to disperse crowds around Place de la République.  For visitors hoping to enjoy the French capital’s usual charms, the weekend has offered a reminder that the scenes behind the familiar tourist landmarks can sometimes tell a very different story.
