Buyers in 17 key European markets registered 300,202 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in September, a 70.3% increase, according to Reuters. Fully electric cars made up 32.6% of sales in those markets.
The figures come from E-Mobility Europe, New Automotive and Fier Automotive data released on Monday. Reuters attributed the growth to expensive oil, government incentives and a wider range of cheaper models.
A total of 1.98 million BEVs have been registered in those 17 markets since January, a 38.1% increase over the comparable stretch of 2025.
France recorded 65,243 BEV registrations, equal to a 41.7% slice of its car sales, according to Reuters. Germany's share came in at 34.6%, backed by 88,724 registrations.
The Nordic countries remained the most electrified markets. Norway led at 98.8%, followed by Denmark at 88.8%, Finland at 62.7% and Sweden at 49.0%. BEVs made up roughly half of the cars registered in Ireland, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The Czech Republic, Italy and Poland stayed near the bottom for electrification, with shares of 11.2%, 7.6% and 6.2%, respectively.
The data arrived as France and Germany struck an agreement to water down the E.U. emissions rules proposed for cars, according to Reuters.
Transport & Environment, a Brussels-based environmental advocacy group, said earlier this month that 1.64 million battery-electric vehicles were sold across the E.U. from January through August, a 45% jump from the same eight months of 2025. That tally covers the E.U. rather than the 17 markets in the latest data.
The group said BEVs held a 22% share over those eight months, up six percentage points from the equivalent stretch of 2025. In August alone, the share reached 28%.
Transport & Environment attributed the growth to E.U. car CO₂ targets that are pushing manufacturers to expand their electric lineups. It said about 60 new BEV models are expected by the end of 2026, compared with an average of roughly 15 new models a year between 2021 and 2025.
