PETALING JAYA: Rising sharply from the landscape like giant stone walls, Malaysia’s limestone hills are easy to admire from a distance. What is less obvious is how much they hold inside - caves, fossils, unusual wildlife, and traces of human history stretching back thousands of years.
A new exhibition at Muzium Negara is shining a light on that hidden world. "Pameran Khazanah Kars Malaysia", which runs until Dec 31, brings together 87 collections, including mammal, bird, amphibian and reptile specimens, rocks and fossils, archaeological finds, snail specimens and herbarium material.
Karst is a type of landscape that forms when water gradually dissolves soluble rock, especially limestone. Over immense periods of time, that process can create caves, sinkholes, underground drainage systems, cliffs and the steep-sided limestone formations familiar in many parts of Malaysia.
The exhibition is divided into three main segments covering the formation of karst landscapes; fossil and archaeological discoveries; the plants and animals associated with these environments; and efforts to conserve and manage them.
The exhibition is designed to help visitors understand not only cave ecosystems and biodiversity, but also the links between karst landscapes, archaeology, history and local culture.
A natural archive beneath our feet
Part of the appeal of Malaysia’s limestone landscapes is that they can act like natural archives. Layers of rock and cave deposits may contain clues to ancient environments, extinct or long-vanished animals, and the people who once lived in or used these spaces.
At the same time, modern karst environments remain very much alive. Their caves provide roosting sites for bats and shelter for specialised invertebrates, while plants growing on isolated limestone outcrops can sometimes be found nowhere else.
This combination of geology and life is one reason karst areas can be particularly vulnerable. Damage to a small limestone hill or cave system may affect species with nowhere else to go, while quarrying, development and careless tourism can permanently alter geological features that took millions of years to form.
Conservation, therefore, forms part of the exhibition, including examples of work by government agencies, private organisations and non-governmental groups to protect and manage karst areas.
For visitors, the exhibition offers a chance to look at Malaysia’s limestone scenery as more than a backdrop for caves, temples or weekend trips. The rocks themselves help tell a story about how the landscape formed, while the fossils, archaeological finds and animal specimens reveal what those environments have supported over time.
It also makes for an accessible introduction to a subject that can otherwise sound highly technical. You do not need to know your geomorphology from your palaeontology to appreciate the idea that a limestone cave can preserve both geological history and evidence of human life.
