The Bauchi State Police Command has secured the conviction of eight suspected thugs arrested for thuggery and disturbance of public peace in Unguwar Dim, Bauchi metropolis.
The convicts were each sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, with an option of a N370,000 fine, after pleading guilty to the charges against them.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.
Habib said the command received a complaint from the Peace and Security Committee, Unguwar Dim, on October 14, 2026, over a resurgence of thuggery in the area.
He explained that following the complaint, a combined team of operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit, the D Division patrol team and members of the Peace and Security Committee raided the hoodlums’ hideout in the early hours of October 15.
“During the operation, nine suspects were arrested, and dangerous weapons, including rangy, machetes, cutlasses, knives, sticks and illicit substances, were recovered,” Habib’s statement read in parts.
According to the police, eight of the nine suspects were subsequently charged to court after a thorough investigation.
The statement identified some of the convicts as: Abubakar Saddik Abdullahi, 30; Hassan Abdulmumini, 24; Mu’ab Alhassan, 19; Ismail Sabo Usman, 19; and Usman Sani Sulaiman, 22, while three others were also convicted.
Habib said all eight suspects pleaded guilty to the charges during the trial, adding that the court sentenced each of them to eight years’ imprisonment, with an option of a N370,000 fine.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, welcomed the judgment, describing it as a demonstration of an effective police-community partnership and the criminal justice system’s resolve to tackle thuggery.
“The judgment is a testament to effective police-community partnership, legal victory and the resolve of the criminal justice system to deal decisively with thuggery,” the statement quoted the commissioner as saying.
Aliyu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining operations against thuggery, breaches of public peace and other violent crimes across the state.
He urged residents to continue supporting the police with credible information to help prevent crime and maintain peace and security in their communities.
