Half-centuries from Sharmin Akhter and Shorna Akter failed to spare the Tigresses a heavy defeat as Australia cruised to an eight-wicket victory with 164 balls to spare in the final One Day International in Brisbane on Wednesday.
The defeat completed a 3-0 series whitewash for Nigar Sultana Joty’s side, who lost the opening match by seven wickets and the second by nine wickets.
Bangladesh women played their first-ever three-match bilateral ODI series on Australian soil, but the gap between the sides was evident in all three matches, with the world’s top-ranked team dominating with both bat and ball.
Sent in to bat at Allan Border Field, the green and red side suffered an early collapse, losing three wickets for just 18 runs. They were 23 for three after the first 10 overs before Sharmin and Shorna helped them recover to 172 all out in 49.5 overs.
Sharmin struck eight fours in her 93-ball 50, her 12th ODI half-century. Shorna made 54 off 71 balls, hitting five fours.
The pair helped Bangladesh rebuild through partnerships of 27 for the fourth wicket and 54 for the fifth, while another 27-run stand for the seventh wicket offered further resistance. However, their efforts were not enough to produce a competitive total.
Australia pacer Megan Schutt led the rout with four wickets for 16 runs, following her four-wicket haul for 36 in the previous match. She was named player of the match and player of the series with 10 wickets.
Chasing 173, Australia lost two early wickets, with Disha Biswas and Sultana Khatun striking for Bangladesh.
However, the bowlers failed to build on those breakthroughs as the hosts took control.
Ellyse Perry smashed an unbeaten 65 off 64 balls, while Annabel Sutherland struck an unbeaten 74 off 52 deliveries to guide Australia to victory in just 22.4 overs.
Despite the series whitewash, the Tigresses posed for photographs with their Australian counterparts after the final match.
