TDP legal cell president Posani Venkateswarlu said on Wednesday that the Supreme Court empowered the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure the peaceful conduct of local body elections, but did not find fault with it, or any political party, as claimed by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
The apex court reinforced the SEC’s freedom, while directing it to duly address the candidates’ grievances, Mr. Venkateswarlu opined while addressing the media at the party central office.
Mr. Venkateswarlu said the purported inability of several candidates to file their nominations due to law and order disruptions was the crux of the matter.
The Supreme Court ordered that the SEC should thoroughly review the complaints and grant a fresh opportunity for filing nominations, if it reached the conclusion that there were indeed disturbances that prevented the candidates from filing their papers.
The court mandated the SEC to take the decision on giving aggrieved candidates extra time (48 hours) for filing nominations by the end of October 22, and dismissed the YSRCP’s claim that the apex court reprimanded the SEC.
The Supreme Court merely acknowledged the complaints received so far and instructed the SEC to make independent decisions based on the evidence presented to it, he asserted.
Mr. Venkateswarlu said that the Supreme Court told the SEC to assess the situation on the basis of merits of the complaints lodged, and did not dictate the exact number of constituencies requiring intervention. What the YSRCP was doing was tantamount to politicising the order of the country’s highest court of law, he added.
