A 62-year-old woman died while attempting to save a cow from an approaching train in Malbazar block of Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday morning.
Residents said Jabeda Khatun, the deceased, lived near the railway crossing.
Around 8am, she was taking a cow across the tracks near a railway level crossing between Odlabari and Damdim to a nearby field for grazing.
Jabeda noticed a passenger train approaching and tried to save the cow. However, she couldn’t avoid the train.
Both she and the animal were flung away from the impact of the collision.
Jabeda died on the spot, while the cow suffered serious injuries.
Residents said that the train had repeatedly honked, but the accident could not
be prevented.
After the incident, Government Railway Police reached the spot and recovered the body.
A source said they have initiated a probe.
Cattle seized
A team from the Kotwali police station in Cooch Behar, acting on a tip-off, rescued five bull calves from an SUV on Monday night.
The animals were being transported illegally and were found tied inside the vehicle, said a source.
The vehicle, which had an Assam registration number, was intercepted by the police team. However, the driver managed to slip away.
After the rescue, the calves were shifted to the animal pound run by the Cooch Behar municipality.
Police have seized the vehicle and have registered a case. An investigation is on.
