The ongoing construction of Phase II of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks has recorded appreciable progress, as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Friday undertook an unscheduled inspection of the project in Abuja to assess the pace of work, construction standards and compliance with approved specifications.
According to a statement made available to defence correspondents in Abuja by the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Col. Appolonia Anele, the inspection underscored the COAS’s determination to accelerate infrastructure development and address accommodation challenges confronting Nigerian Army personnel and their families, in line with his Soldier First philosophy and commitment to improved troop welfare.
The statement explained that during the visit, Gen. Shaibu inspected residential accommodation blocks, internal road networks, water reticulation systems and other essential facilities designed to provide a conducive living environment for personnel.
It added that the army chief also received briefings from project engineers and consultants on construction progress, implementation challenges and expected completion timelines.
While expressing satisfaction with the progress achieved, the COAS charged contractors to sustain the momentum, maintain high construction standards and ensure timely delivery without compromising quality. He stressed that infrastructure projects must deliver lasting value and meet the welfare needs of troops and their families.
The COAS noted that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks, named in honour of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, “represents a significant intervention in the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to bridge accommodation gaps, enhance living conditions and boost personnel morale”.
The statement pointed out that the army chief reaffirmed that the provision of modern residential facilities and other welfare infrastructure remained central to his vision of building a highly motivated, professional, resilient and combat-ready army capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities.
It added that Gen. Shaibu further reiterated his commitment to sustained monitoring of infrastructure projects across army formations and barracks, assuring that regular and unscheduled inspections would continue to guarantee quality delivery, transparency, accountability and value for money.
