Sony has introduced a new premium Walkman music player priced at nearly USD 5,900, bringing high-end portable audio to enthusiasts willing to spend thousands of dollars on their listening experience. The flagship NW-WM1ZM3 is part of a refreshed lineup designed to deliver detailed sound through specialized audio components and upgraded playback technology.
Announced on Thursday (October 15, 2026), the new range reflects Sony's continued focus on dedicated music players as smartphones have become most consumers' primary listening device. The flagship model stands out for its gold-plated copper chassis and premium internal hardware.
Gold-Plated Copper Body Sets Flagship Apart
The NW-WM1ZM3 features a precision-machined chassis made from 99.99% pure, oxygen-free copper, with gold plating on the body. According to Sony, this construction helps provide a stable electrical ground and supports its efforts to reduce unwanted noise during playback.
The player also uses thick KIMBER KABLE wiring, along with upgraded power circuitry and copper components. These changes aim to preserve audio detail and deliver powerful bass, clear highs, and a wider soundstage.
However, the gold-plated finish is only one part of the design. Sony emphasizes the combination of materials, electrical components, and audio processing used throughout the device.
New Walkman Supports High-Resolution Audio
The flagship player uses Sony's S-Master HX digital amplification technology, which is designed to deliver detailed audio reproduction. It also supports the company's DSD Remastering Engine, which converts PCM audio into an 11.2MHz DSD stream.
According to Sony, the technology works with both downloaded music and Wi-Fi-streamed audio. The NW-WM1ZM3 also offers up to 35 hours of MP3 playback under specified conditions, while streaming battery life can reach 31 hours. A larger 5.5-inch screen gives users more space to browse music and view album artwork. Actual battery performance will depend on settings and usage.
Sony Introduces Two More Premium Players
The NW-WM1ZM3 is not the only device in the new lineup. Sony has also announced the NW-WM1AM3 at USD 2,999.99 and the NW-ZX900 at USD 1,899.99 in the US. The WM1AM3 shares several features with the flagship model, while the ZX900 incorporates selected premium audio components in a different design. All three devices target listeners seeking dedicated music playback hardware.

Pricing Targets a Niche Audio Market
At USD 5,899, the flagship Walkman costs considerably more than most smartphones and mainstream portable music players. Its appeal will likely depend on how much value listeners place on its construction, audio components, and specialized features.
The new lineup shows that Sony still sees a market for high-end portable audio devices. Whether the premium pricing attracts enough buyers will depend on audiophiles' priorities: a dedicated music player rather than an all-purpose smartphone.
