Solar generation accounted for 48.6% of Italy’s renewable electricity output in September 2026, while renewable capacity additions for standalone battery storage slowed compared with the previous year.
Solar generation in Italy reached 5.32 TWh in Italy in September 2026, up 27.1% from the same month in 2025, according to grid operator Terna’s monthly electricity report.
Solar accounted for 48.6% of electricity generated from renewable sources during the month, with output increasing by 1.14 TWh year on year.
The increase was driven mainly by additional installed capacity, which contributed 731 GWh of extra generation, while improved resource availability added 404 GWh.
Renewable energy sources covered 39.4% of national electricity demand in September, down 2.3% from September 2025. Total net electricity generation was 6.4% higher year on year. Renewable sources generated 10.94 TWh, up 0.6%, while non-renewable sources produced 12.73 TWh, up 11.8%.
Electricity demand reached 27,765 GWh, an increase of 6.5% compared with September 2025 and 8.4% compared with September 2024.
Renewable generation capacity increased by 675 MW in September, 238 MW or 54.5% more than in the same month last year. In the first nine months of 2026, installed solar capacity grew by 4,834 MW, up 18.6% from the 4,078 MW added during the same period in 2025.
Italy added 911 MW of nominal operating storage power capacity in the first nine months of 2026, compared with 1,482 MW in the same period of 2025 – a decline of 572 MW, or 38.6%.
Maximum usable storage capacity increased by 1,962 MWh, down from 4,376 MWh in the first nine months of 2025, a reduction of 2,415 MWh, or 55.2%.
Terna reported 984,831 active energy storage systems as of Sept. 30, 2026.
