Every loss is a pretty naff feeling. But the ones when you leave feeling like the players just didn’t turn up, and there was more on the table if we just upped a couple of percentage points, are perhaps the most frustrating.
Look, these games happen. Wigan Athletic knocked it about nicely and played better football than their league position suggests, but we should’ve given them a better game and can’t have any real complaints about the result.
As ever, there was plenty to discuss for the fans post-game, but unfortunately those talking points weren’t as positive as they have been in recent weeks…
Lewis Wing
The captain’s performances have been a topic of discussion for a little while now, and it was no different after Saturday’s result.
Now is not the time to go into my full thoughts on the matter, but essentially I think he’s been made of a bit of a scapegoat and deserves a bit of patience from us. Some agree with me on that, some not so much…
We need a captain who is a leader Wing isn’t #Readingfc

Keep seeing everyone calling for Wing to be dropped. But realistically who you putting in? Savage is way off it in form. Looks dreadful. Fraser is barely a squad player for us. Wing is untouchable because there’s no serious competition exactly like his mate in goal #readingfc

#readingfc Can Leam PLEASE move Wing back into the 6, hes so much better there its unbelievable as well as i think the team are better when hes deeper. IDK why everyone wanted him to play further forward but hes been so much worse ever since he moved

Need to have a serious chat about Lewis Wing. What has he done all year?? #readingfc

Drop Wing. #readingfc

This becoming clearer and clearer, and those who disagreed look a little stupid now #readingfchttps://t.co/Tcqrp3njQF

Consistently inconsistent
Inconsistent seemed to be the word of the day for the Loyal Royals after the defeat. And, to be honest, it’s a pretty apt word for what we’re seeing at the moment – particularly when you compare the home and away performances.
We’re fortunate that, in a league like this, we could still find a way into the top six playing like this. But, to be sure of that – or try and get anything better – you need to be consistent week after week.
At our best we can beat any team in this league, but promotion teams don’t lose games against bottom of the league…
Feels like we’re seeing a pattern. In the mix now, but seem too inconsistent for much more than 6th… Beaten no one in the current top half and just 1 point against 2 teams in the top 6. When we go behind we get nothing. And yes, been some good stuff but standards 😬#readingfc

Classic Reading. Incapable of backing up a good result. So many awful points dropped already. Far too inconsistent if we want to do anything this season. #readingfc

Teams like Huddersfield, Plymouth, Wednesday, Stockport, Bradford don’t lose these type of games. They win convincingly. Way too inconsistent for a squad that bare minimum should be getting top 6 #ReadingFC

Such a disappointing result after last weekend, consistently inconsistent, just not good enough if you want promotion this season! Pipe dream! Mid-table Royals! Need maximum points in the next two home games now! #readingfc#readingtilidiehttps://t.co/KN7FNZYboy

Exactly the sort of performance as to why we won’t be taken seriously as promotion contenders this season. Far too inconsistent. Garbage. #readingfchttps://t.co/C5Hym6t0Ih

Consistency is a problem #readingfc

Doesn't matter how good we can be, our consistency means we're going nowhere. Anything other than a win today is just not good enough. 20 minutes to find 2 😬 #ReadingFC

A poor performance
It’s a very fine line between trying not to overreact to a defeat but also being rightly disappointed and frustrated at a poor result and performance. And let’s face it, Saturday was poor.
Yes, we created chances. But as a 90-minute performance, we’ve shown we can be so much better – even without the likes of George Earthy and Jack Marriott – so there are no excuses.
The fans were rightly unimpressed with what they saw…
Don’t get me wrong, I love an away day, but getting up at 6 o’clock and trekking 100s of miles to watch that dross, it’s not brilliant. #readingfc

and that is why we will be in league one again next season .. promotion chasing teams don’t get beat by bottom of the league .. shambles #readingfc

Simple but honest

Just not good enough today and against Wigan that is unacceptable #readingfc
One of the worst performances of the season, outplayed all over the park and we looked clueless on how to stop them. Richardson et al. gave the players a tough job by getting out thought and out tactic-ed by Caldwell #readingfc

Safe to say that was crap. Could be out there until next week and not score. Just so naïve, negative, felt like a terrible throwback to last season. #readingfc
— Richard Langley (@simply_langers) October 17, 2026
Tough one to lose that, simply got to be better and have a plan B on the days plan A dosent work.#Readingfc

Conclusion
Frustratingly, we can’t change the result now. There just has to be a marked improvement in the next two. From a personal perspective, even two wins in the next two won’t fully quash my doubts.
Putting the MK Dons result to one side, we need to see a closer gap in our intent and urgency between our home and away performances.
We’ve shown we can put goals past anyone, home or away, but it feels like Leam Richardson is so much more reserved on the road – and I just don’t think he needs to be. The sooner he realises that the better.
