Suits appear to be Penélope Cruz’s preferred uniform as she promotes her new drama film, La bola negra. Last Thursday, the Oscar-winning star attended a gala during the 70th BFI London Film Festival at the Royal Festival Hall, where she celebrated her new film in a black-and-white look pulled from the fashion archives.
The ensemble in question was a mod-inspired pantsuit from the Ralph Lauren Spring/Summer 2014 ready-to-wear collection, styled by Anna Castan. It consisted of a single-breasted, form-fitting blazer in black, with matching flared pants and platform heels. These more subdued pieces were contrasted by patterned layers underneath, including a windowpane-check shirt and a large plaid tie, left undone and hanging around Cruz’s neck like a stole.

When this Ralph Lauren collection was originally unveiled, it was comprised mainly of black-and-white looks, with a few neon dresses in rainbow hues sprinkled into the mix. But Cruz and her stylist decided to opt for one of those many achromatic fits, perhaps as a nod to the title of her movie (which translates to “the black ball” in English).

The look stemmed from the Ralph Lauren Spring/Summer 2014 ready-to-wear collection.
For accessories, Cruz spiced up the suit with a black beret—in contrast to the plaid one that appeared on the runway—along with jewelry from Garatti, including diamond climber earrings, a platinum bracelet, and rings.
As she promotes La bola negra, Cruz has been on a menswear-inspired kick, from her gray suit with a striped scarf at a London screening on Saturday to the sharp tuxedo-style look she wore last week while doing press.

Cruz has been on a menswear streak while promoting La bola negra.
The trend suits her well. La bola negra arrives in U.S. theaters on October 16.
