Pirate Chain has reported a network exploit that enabled the unauthorized creation of approximately 39.8 million ARRR. Pirate Chain confirmed on Oct. 15 that the flaw was discovered on Oct. 14 and increased the cryptocurrency's supply by roughly 20%.
The blockchain remains operational, but the development team has asked users not to move funds while it investigates the incident and prepares recovery measures.
Pirate Chain Exploit Linked to Two Validation Failures
The vulnerability involved two transaction checks in Pirate Chain's software. One allowed transactions to bypass checks on new coin issuance. The other caused the network to interpret output scripts incorrectly. Together, these failures enabled the creation of coins that the network should have rejected.
The incident followed the Ironwood upgrade, which Pirate Chain scheduled for Oct. 3. The update introduced a new shielded pool and a transparent accounting system to track supply moving between pools. Developers initially linked the vulnerability to that accounting layer. Zcash had deployed its own Ironwood upgrade following a separate supply vulnerability earlier in 2026.
The team found no evidence that notary keys or the cryptography protecting shielded transactions were compromised. Its findings identified transaction validation, rather than the underlying privacy technology, as the source of unauthorized issuance.
Unauthorized ARRR Tokens Moved into Sapling Shielded Pool
Pirate Chain reported that the newly created coins went directly into the Sapling shielded pool. This system conceals transaction details from public view, making it difficult to determine where the unauthorized coins went afterward. The team acknowledged that it could not trace their full subsequent movement.
Shielded transactions form part of Pirate Chain's design, which hides transfers by default. An earlier vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool raised similar concerns about counterfeit coins, although Zcash reported no evidence of exploitation. Pirate Chain said it believes activity linked to the unauthorized issuance remained primarily on-chain, but it could not establish every destination.
Crypto exchange NonKYC detected suspicious deposits connected to the incident. According to Pirate Chain, the platform restricted the associated account and prevented withdrawals. The team did not disclose how many unauthorized tokens reached the exchange or whether any had been sold.
Exchanges and Mining Pools Asked to Pause Operations
Operators of delayed Proof-of-Work, known as dPoW, agreed to suspend notarizations temporarily. This system records Pirate Chain's transaction history on Komodo Classic and then Litecoin, providing additional protection against attempts to rewrite blockchain records.
Developers asked exchanges and mining pools to pause related operations voluntarily while they prepare a recovery plan. Users were instructed to avoid sending or moving ARRR. Pirate Chain has not announced when these precautions will end or whether all exchanges have suspended operations.
Pirate Chain Changes Rollback Plan as Recovery Work Continues
An initial notice on Oct. 15 said developers intended to roll the blockchain back to Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. Pacific Time. Such a move would replace transactions recorded after that point. However, a later statement clarified that the project's decentralized structure prevents developers from reversing blockchain history unilaterally.
A separate incident involving Cronos led validators to roll back blockchain transactions following the Tectonic exploit in September. Pirate Chain has not confirmed an agreed rollback or a completed repair. Instead, developers are working with other communities on possible recovery measures.
The project plans to publish a technical post-mortem and recovery instructions for users. It has not provided a release date or explained how it intends to address the extra ARRR already transferred into shielded pools.
