Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar created history in the Ranji Trophy on Monday by becoming only the second Indian batter to score 400 runs in the tournament, achieving the feat after a gap of 78 years.
The 29-year-old remained unbeaten on 400 against Nagaland in a Plate Group match at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima. He faced 517 deliveries, hitting 46 fours and seven sixes in a remarkable innings that helped Mizoram reach 581 for nine before declaring their first innings.
Sutar’s achievement puts him alongside BB Nimbalkar, who scored an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar during the 1948-49 Ranji Trophy season. Nimbalkar remains the only batter to have scored more runs in a single Ranji Trophy innings.
Sutar also surpassed Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw’s previous Ranji Trophy record of 379 runs, making his 400-run knock the second-highest individual score in the tournament’s history. He became only the 10th batter in the history of first-class cricket to reach the 400-run mark in a single innings.
The achievement is particularly significant as Sutar reached the milestone in only his second first-class match. Born in Mumbai, he switched to Mizoram ahead of the current season in search of more opportunities to play red-ball cricket after representing Mumbai in domestic competitions.
His innings provided a major boost to Mizoram, with Jehu Anderson contributing 69 runs. Sutar continued batting even as wickets fell at the other end, eventually reaching the landmark before the team declared its innings at 581 for nine.
