Household rubbish from thousands of properties in Perth’s northern and central suburbs will be sent all the way to Kwinana in the name of energy recovery.
The City of Stirling was the first of five metropolitan council areas to start sending household waste south to Kwinana Energy Recovery, instead of north to the fast filling Tamala Park tip run by Mindarie Regional Council.
Kwinana Energy Recovery is Australia’s first operational waste-to-energy site, and uses thermal treatment to extract energy and recoverable materials from non-recyclable waste.
In coming months, the rubbish of up to 160,000 homes in the City of Perth, Town of Cambridge, Town of Victoria Park and City of Vincent will also be redirected to Kwinana.
Rubbish trucks in the City of Joondalup and City of Wanneroo will continue delivering to Tamala Park until it reaches capacity ahead of its scheduled closure in 2029.
Cambridge mayor and Mindarie Regional Council chair Gary Mack described the first waste delivery to Kwinana as a “landmark moment.”
“This agreement is the culmination of five years of hard work by MRC and its member councils,” he said.
“Since 1987, we’ve had the job of delivering sustainable waste management options for our members and keeping pace with new and emerging technologies to deliver the best possible services and value for ratepayers.
“This is a landmark moment which underlines our commitment to circular economy goals.
“Most importantly, it ensures that household bins across Perth will continue to be collected, emptied and managed well into the future.”
