From Friday to Sunday, more than 20,000 items are expected to be up for sale at bargain basement prices, including ski and snowboard equipment, alpine touring gear and Nordic or cross-country gear, said Calgary New & Used Ski Sale chair emeritus Geoff Scotton.
The sale was hosted at the Max Bell Centre for the past 32 years but has outgrown the space, he said.

“We’ve become aware in probably the last five years or so that the sale has grown steadily through the years; we were bumping up against the limits to expansion in that venue, we had just enough floor space, but parking was an issue,” Scotton said. “The fact that it was on two levels with stairs to get up to the mezzanine in Max Bell was not as good as it could be for people who are mobility constrained, so we came to the conclusion that we needed to move.”
The Sportsplex had been previously considered to host the event after it was built.
It will now feature everything anyone needs to hit the slopes in one 50,000-square-foot space, he said.
“We’ll have nine booths there from various ski areas and specialty interests that will be wanting to talk to our patrons,” Scotton said. “The ski areas will also be there to sell passes for the winter, so it’s a one-stop shop for winter skiing and snowboarding in terms of getting gear, clothing and ski passes if you need them.”

The customer experience is also improved with a new computer system for faster transactions, 20 tills and about 1,000 parking spaces.
In 18 hours, they sell around $1.4 million worth of ski equipment, he said.
Although there are similar sales in Toronto and Vancouver, the Calgary sale offers a wider range of products.

It also serves as a fundraiser for the Canadian Ski Patrol, the Calgary Ski Club and the Lake Louise Development Association.
The sale is 100 per cent led, planned, managed, executed and staffed by around 500 volunteers across all three organizations, Scotton said.
“These clubs deliver ski safety and rescue, amateur sport skiing, recreational skiing and events to support the winter and snow community,” he said. “The Ski Patrol supports summer events through delivering first aid, for example, at the Calgary Marathon, and the Lake Louise Ski Club develops amateur athletes that go on to bigger and better things.”

All three organizations are charitable societies under the Alberta Societies Act. Some of the funds are also used to deliver programs that offer support to Calgary and Alberta’s ski and snowboarding communities.
Shop and public consignment took place earlier in the week in preparation for their first day.
Sale hours vary, with Friday being from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
