Most event organizers handle travel chaos the old-fashioned way: they buy an insurance policy, cross their fingers, and brace for the paperwork. NEXTPredict took a different route, and it made sense for a company whose entire brand is built on prediction markets.
The company paid a $12,000 premium on Kalshi for contracts that pay out up to $3 million if at least 50% of scheduled flights at New York’s JFK International Airport get canceled on October 21, 2026. That’s the day before its NEXTPredict NYC summit kicks off.
How the trade works
The deal was executed as a block trade, a single large transaction negotiated outside the normal order flow. NEXTPredict bought 3 million YES contracts at $0.004 apiece.
Do the math and you land at the $12,000 premium. If the cancellation threshold is hit, those contracts cover up to $3 million, matching the amount NEXTPredict has invested in the event.
The pricing reflects odds of approximately 250-to-1. Put simply, the market treats half of JFK’s schedule vanishing on a single October day as a long shot, which is exactly what makes it cheap protection.
Susquehanna sat on the other side of the trade as market maker. That means the trading firm collected the premium and accepted the risk of paying out if JFK turns into a parking lot for grounded planes.
The timing was tight. Kalshi’s JFK flight-cancellation contract template received self-certification with the CFTC on July 14, 2026. NEXTPredict’s trade followed on or around July 27, 2026, roughly two weeks later.
Why not just buy insurance
Traditional event insurance tends to focus on two things: whether the show gets scrapped entirely and what goes wrong inside the venue. NEXTPredict zeroed in on a narrower problem, which is attendees who never make it to the venue at all.
Co-founder Pierre Lindh framed the trade as a shield against classic force majeure risks, such as severe weather or geopolitical disruptions, that could gut attendance. He also pointed to a practical advantage: sidestepping the delays and disputes that often come with conventional cancellation coverage.
That second point is the real selling feature. An insurance claim can turn into a months-long argument over policy language and causation. A prediction market contract settles on a defined, observable outcome: either half the flights were canceled or they weren’t.
The trigger also has an elegant logic. The contract pays based on flight cancellations, not on whether the conference itself suffers. NEXTPredict is betting that a mass grounding at JFK would hurt turnout, and the payout is meant to offset that damage.
The event behind the hedge
NEXTPredict NYC is a business-to-business prediction markets summit scheduled for October 22-23, 2026, at Convene Hudson Yards in Manhattan. The company expects around 2,500 attendees and more than 50 speakers.
The summit counts Morgan Stanley among its strategic partners.
NEXTPredict also brings more than 13 years of experience running events and handling the disruptions that come with them.
A $3 million budget is a substantial sum to expose to a single bad weather day. Spending $12,000 to protect it works out to a fraction of a percent of the total.
What this means for prediction markets
The most interesting part of this story isn’t the conference. It’s what the trade signals about how regulated prediction markets are being used.
For years, the public image of these platforms leaned toward election wagers and sports side bets. This trade is a different animal: a corporation using a CFTC-overseen event contract to transfer a real operational risk to a professional counterparty.
Susquehanna’s involvement matters here too. A major trading firm stepping in as market maker on a niche contract suggests institutional players see enough value in pricing these risks to put capital behind them.
There are open questions worth watching. Basis risk is one: a conference could still suffer from travel trouble that falls short of the 50% threshold, leaving the hedge unpaid while attendance drops. Custom contracts like this also depend on the regulatory process continuing to approve new templates at a usable pace.
There’s also an obvious marketing dimension. A prediction markets company hedging its own prediction markets conference on a prediction market is about as on-brand as it gets.
Come October 21, NEXTPredict will be hoping its $12,000 buys nothing but peace of mind. In the hedging business, a policy that never pays out is usually the best possible result.
