It ended Coventry 4 Newcastle 1 on Monday night.
A disastrous result.
The home side somehow winning by a three goal margin despite looking so poor for most of the match.
Matthias Jaissle stunned that his Newcastle United team dominated all of the stats and yet still managed to be on the receiving end of such a scoreline.
An object lesson in poor defending at crucial moments and arguably even worse at the other end, where countless chances and promising situations were wasted.
Newcastle United fans hadn’t seen such a shocking scoreline since…the last time the team played on a Monday night.
A 4-1 at Elland Road against Leeds United in the previous Premier League away game.
Tell me why, I don’t like Mondays…
Monday night football on the road for Newcastle United fans.
A miserable story and it isn’t just the logistics of how to get back from a dismal place like Coventry when there are no public transport options.
If you think this Monday night football nightmare was a freak one-off, think again. Not even a freak two-off if you include the Leeds match.
For Newcastle United fans the history of playing away from home in the Premier League on a Monday night makes scary reading.
Since September 2002, a period of over 24 years, Newcastle United have played 31 Premier League matches away from home on a Monday night (this doesn’t include those played on Bank Holiday Mondays or festive season games).
These last 31 away Monday night Premier League matches across 24+ years have produced four wins, six draws and 21 defeats for NUFC.
I am already dreading the next announcement of Premier League matches moved for the benefit of Sky Sports…
