The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined Pakistan and Sri Lanka for slow over-rates in their ODI tri-series opener in Rawalpindi on Sunday, October 18. Pakistan received a penalty of 10% of their match fee, while Sri Lanka were fined 5%.
Match referee Jeff Crowe imposed the sanctions after officials found Pakistan two overs short and Sri Lanka one over short. The calculations accounted for time allowances during the match. On-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Wayne Knights, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi levelled the charges.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams face a fine of 5% of their match fee for every over they fail to bowl within the allotted time. Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions. Therefore, the ICC did not need to hold formal hearings.
Despite the penalty, Pakistan began the tri-series with a 37-run victory over Sri Lanka. Salman Ali Agha’s century and an effective bowling display helped the hosts secure the win. Pakistan set a target of 306 runs before dismissing Sri Lanka for 268 in 48.1 overs.
