ISTANBUL (AP) — A heavy downpour has shut down Istanbul, flooded homes and roads and killed at least two people. Rescuers worked overnight to save hundreds of people stranded at their workplaces, while bystanders helped countless others.
The downpour Wednesday night flooded homes and businesses and inundated roads and underpasses, stranding vehicles and causing traffic chaos in Turkey’s largest city.
Local media reported two deaths. A 14-year-old was electrocuted after stepping in a puddle at a park in the Fatih district, and a 34-year-old slipped on a sidewalk in the Sariyer district and hit their head.
Heavy rain was still falling Thursday morning.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality said some areas had the highest amount of rain since 1985.
The governor’s office said education would be suspended Thursday and some state employees would be placed on leave. It advised residents to stay home unless travel was absolutely necessary and for people living in basement apartments to spend the night elsewhere.
Motorcycles, meanwhile, were barred from traffic.

Cole Perfetti has made it clear he doesn’t want to get ahead of himself.
The Winnipeg Jets winger has first-hand knowledge on how humbling the NHL can be, coming off a quiet campaign as he worked his way back from a high ankle sprain.
But with the benefit of a full summer of training and a return to health, Perfetti has taken advantage of his promotion to the top line and quickly shown he belongs.
The latest proof came Tuesday, with Perfetti scoring a pair of goals — including the game-winner — in a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild at Canada Life Centre.

The developer of a hotly debated project that would add 110 housing units to the Granite Curling Club’s parking lot has begun investigative work at the site while awaiting a judge’s decision on construction.
While some digging took place at the city-owned property last week, its developer said construction has yet to begin.
“I would call (the digging so far) investigative site work. It’s not preparing in any way for construction, other than to ensure that the reports that are required for any site have been completed,” said Jeremy Read, chief executive officer of UWCRC 2.0 Inc.
A heritage resources impact assessment will determine if the site has archeological significance. That work will check for everything from fossils to unmarked graves, said Read.

The family of a Ste. Anne chef who died after an altercation at a party says they are angry a manslaughter charge has been stayed against a 46-year-old man.
“What I’ve been told is they don’t have enough evidence to prosecute criminally because the only ones that are alive to tell the story are saying they did it in self defence,” said Jason Huley, brother of 49-year-old Cameron Huley, who died May 3.
“I’m pissed. I hate our justice system … I feel they let us down.”
Steinbach RCMP were called to a home in the RM of Ste. Anne just after 11:30 p.m. on May 2 about an assault. Cameron Huley was found suffering from serious injuries. He died hours later in hospital, police said.

They’re getting the battle of the bands back together.
After a seven-year hiatus, Winn$tock returns tonight at Cowboys in Winnipeg’s Windsor Park neighbourhood. The fundraising concert features musical talent from the city’s financial and legal services industries.
Six bands will take the stage. The money raised will go to KidThink Children’s Mental Health Centre, a Manitoba-based non-profit organization.
Winnipeg has many “closet musicians,” said Brian Taylor, who sits on the event’s 11-person organizing committee.

High-risk sex offender charged with Osborne Village apartment break-ins

A convicted, high-risk sex offender has been arrested for allegedly breaking into several Osborne Village apartments last month, court records show.
Winnipeg Police Service property crime investigators were alerted to the series of break-ins in September.
Investigators learned that three break-and-enters occurred Sept. 13-14 at apartments on the 200 block of Stradbrook Avenue; a suspect got inside via a window.
In two of the break-ins, police said, the suspect fled after encountering the residents inside their homes. Nothing was stolen and no one was hurt in any of the incidents.
