Durga Puja festivities gathered momentum across Tripura on Saturday as Mahasaptami rituals began at traditional temples and puja organisers stepped up celebrations, with large crowds of devotees and pandal-hoppers thronging the streets of Agartala to catch a glimpse of Goddess Durga.
The capital witnessed a surge in footfall as people visited decorated puja pandals to offer prayers, admire idols and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Pandal-hopping peaked with families, groups of friends and devotees taking to the streets from the evening, turning several parts of the city into busy gathering points.
The traditional Durga Puja at Durga Bari in Agartala was among the prominent religious observances, with devotees gathering to participate in Mahasaptami rituals. The temple's puja, rooted in Tripura's religious and cultural traditions, drew considerable interest from worshippers.
Pandal-hopping had begun gathering pace from Mahapanchami, when several puja committees opened their pandals to the public. Since then, the steady flow of visitors has increased as people move from one venue to another to see the idols, elaborate decorations and illuminated structures.
With the celebrations entering a key phase, restrictions on entry to designated puja venues have come into force, while many visitors have opted to walk between pandals amid the heavy movement of people.
This year, Mahasaptami rituals are being observed on both October 17 and 18 because of the particular calculation of the lunar calendar.
