He was just a plumber. Then he helped save a plane full of passengers - opinion

JERUSALEM — He is a plumber by profession, a husband and father by nature, and a hero because of the decision he made when lives hung in the balance.

Yaniv Hayoun never boarded a plane expecting to become a hero. He was traveling home to Israel when violence erupted aboard a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. When the captain was seriously injured and the aircraft began descending dangerously, Hayoun faced a choice that would test his courage: remain in his seat and hope someone else would act, or move toward the danger.

He chose to act.

Hayoun joined other passengers in confronting the attacker inside the cockpit. After helping restrain him, Hayoun returned to the cockpit and pulled back on the aircraft's controls in an effort to stabilize the plane until another pilot could take over. The aircraft was diverted to Saudi Arabia and landed safely. Everyone aboard survived.

Hayoun was not a commercial pilot. He was a plumber who suddenly found himself in a situation few people could imagine. Yet when lives were at stake, he refused to stand by. He acted alongside fellow passengers who were willing to risk their own safety to protect others.

His courage demonstrates a powerful truth: heroism does not depend on a title, a uniform, or professional training. Sometimes it begins with an ordinary person recognizing that others are in danger and refusing to look away.

Just one week after the harrowing flight, Hayoun's story became part of a historic gathering in Jerusalem.

On October 7, 2026, the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks on Israel, more than 2,100 Christian leaders gathered in Jerusalem for the Global Prayer Event, an international gathering of remembrance, prayer, and solidarity with the Jewish people. The event was part of a 24-hour global prayer broadcast, hosted by Friends of Zion, that united leaders across nations around a common message: Israel is not alone.

During the gathering, Hayoun received the Hineni Award, named for the Hebrew expression Hineni, meaning “Here I am.”

Throughout Scripture, Hineni expresses a willingness to answer a call and step forward, even when the outcome is uncertain, and the cost may be great.

Hayoun embodied that spirit aboard the aircraft. He could not have known how the confrontation would end or whether he would survive. But he moved toward those who needed help, putting his own safety at risk to protect the lives of others.

His recognition in Jerusalem was especially meaningful on a day devoted to remembering the victims of October 7, honoring survivors, and standing with families still carrying the pain of that terrible day.

Yet Hayoun was not the only person whose story of courage and survival was honored.

Among those who joined the Jerusalem gathering were four former hostages whose lives were forever changed by the October 7 attacks: Agam Berger, Sagui Dekel-Chen, Bar Kupershtein, and Evyatar David. Each represented a deeply personal story of captivity, survival, and the difficult journey of rebuilding life after unimaginable trauma.

Their presence gave the gathering a significance that extended beyond speeches and ceremonies. These were people whose lives had been directly affected by the attacks, whose families had endured extraordinary anguish, and whose survival carried a meaning that no statistic could fully convey.

Together with Hayoun, they represented different expressions of courage: the courage to intervene when lives are threatened, the courage to endure captivity, and the courage to begin again after profound suffering.

The October 7, 2023, attacks claimed more than 1,200 lives and resulted in 251 people being taken hostage. The tragedy left families shattered, communities devastated, and survivors facing a long road toward healing.

Three years later, the pain remains. Remembering those who were murdered, listening to survivors, and honoring the former hostages are essential to preserving the truth of what happened and recognizing the humanity of those whose lives were changed forever.

For the organizers of the Global Prayer Event, bringing thousands together in Jerusalem was about more than marking an anniversary. It was a declaration that the Jewish people must never be abandoned to hatred or left to believe the world has forgotten their suffering.

The former hostages who joined the gathering offered a powerful reminder: survival is not the end of the story. Healing, rebuilding, and finding the strength to move forward can take years, and the support of others matters.

In honoring these men and women, Jerusalem became a place where courage, remembrance, and solidarity met. Their stories reminded those gathered that behind every headline are human beings whose lives deserve to be remembered and whose dignity must never be forgotten.

For Yaniv Hayoun, the journey from an ordinary day of travel to an extraordinary act of courage culminated in recognition in the very city where thousands had gathered to stand with Israel.

He did not act because he expected an award. He acted because people were in danger and someone needed to help.

That is what makes his story so powerful.

When lives are in danger, someone must be willing to say, “Here I am.”

Yaniv Hayoun answered that call. In Jerusalem, alongside survivors and former hostages whose courage continues to inspire, his story became part of a larger message to the world: even in the face of terror, courage can prevail, hope can endure, and no one should have to stand alone.
