Pakistani-born heart surgeon Dr. Asif Hassan has received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pride of Britain Awards 2026, recognizing his 35 years of service to children’s heart care in the UK.
During his career, Dr. Hassan performed more than 4,000 heart operations on children and took part in around 400 heart transplants.
Dr. Hassan spent almost 30 years leading pediatric cardiac surgery services at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. There, he treated children born with complex heart conditions and helped advance heart transplantation for young patients.
Alongside his team, he took on challenging cases involving children with severely limited chances of survival. Some needed highly specialized treatment after other medical centers considered surgery exceptionally high-risk.
His former patients include Max Johnson and Cecilia Adamo. Both previously received the Pride of Britain Children of Courage Award.
Beyond the operating theater, Dr. Hassan helped expand treatment options for children awaiting complex heart transplants.
He co-led Newcastle’s Bridge to Transplant program, which uses a mechanical pump called the Berlin Heart. The device supports blood circulation in seriously ill children while they wait for a suitable donor heart.
He also helped introduce a surgical approach described as “bootless closure”. The technique helps surgeons close a child’s chest after transplantation when the donor heart is larger than the space available.
Dr. Hassan also trained young cardiac surgeons from the UK and other countries. He regarded preparing the next generation as a central part of his career, rather than an achievement separate from his clinical work.
