KOTA BARU: The recent incident of a 44-year-old nurse who was stabbed six times by her husband is Kelantan's 32nd domestic violence case this year.
The Kelantan Welfare Department described it as its "most serious case" this year.
The incident occurred on Oct 5 at Kampung Padang Lepai, near Kadok in Ketereh. The woman's 78-year-old mother, who was also at the scene, sustained injuries.
Its director, Che Samsuzuki Che Noh, said economic difficulties, workplace stress, mental health problems and drug abuse could contribute to domestic violence.
"Based on our observations, economic factors are among the contributing factors to domestic violence cases.
"In certain cases, some husbands have lost their jobs, while others experience stress at their workplaces, which may contribute to tensions at home," he told reporters after officiating the 2026 Temporary Evacuation Centre Management Training and Simulation Programme here.
He noted that domestic violence was not limited to husbands abusing their wives, as there were also cases involving husbands who were victims.
The department, he said, would continue working with the state Women Development Department to raise awareness and support victims.
He said victims could seek counselling and assistance from the relevant departments, lodge police reports when necessary and obtain medical attention for their injuries.
