The regime in Naypyidaw released rare photographs on Monday of jailed Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, confirming that regime officials delivered books and personal correspondence sent directly by Britain’s King Charles III.
According to a social media post from regime spokesperson Khaing Khaing Soe, regime officials handed over two books—“The Land Gardeners: Soil to Table” and “Soil: The World at Our Feet”—alongside a sealed envelope and an official diplomatic communication from the British monarch.
The delivery represents a rare instance of direct foreign contact with the 81-year-old Nobel laureate, whose exact location and health condition have been difficult to verify since she was ousted and jailed by the military during the February 2021 coup.
Despite repeated formal requests from foreign governments and global bodies, no overseas leader or international envoy has been granted access to Aung San Suu Kyi in regime detention.
The rare royal outreach follows minor adjustments to Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention status under the regime, which seized power during the 2021 coup.
In April, Aung San Suu Kyi was reportedly transferred from prison to house arrest at a designated residence following elections organized under military rule that formally installed regime leader Min Aung Hlaing as president.
The transfer to house arrest still has not been verified.
In August, regime media published images showing Aung San Suu Kyi meeting with a representative from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), marking her first confirmed engagement with an international organization following years of global concern regarding her health and living conditions.
Aung San Suu Kyi is currently serving an 18-year sentence—reduced from an initial 33-year term—at a designated facility on a series of convictions including incitement, corruption, election fraud, and violations of the Official Secrets Act, all of which she and international observers have rejected as politically motivated.
