Gwyneth Paltrow is set to star in her first major television starring role in A24’s upcoming drama The Apology, which just scored a two-season order at Netflix.
The Oscar winner plays Evelyn Amspoker, a grieving mother whose 18-year-old cold case is upended when a stranger confesses. When Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, learn the killer is heading toward a reduced sentence, they decide to take matters into their own hands.
The Apology is created, written, and showrun by Joe Murtagh (The Woman in the Wall), with Academy Award winner Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round) directing. A24 serves as the studio, with Joe Hipps of Cut To executive producing alongside Murtagh, Vinterberg, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Paltrow, known for films like Shakespeare in Love, Iron Man, and Marty Supreme, has rarely ventured into television. Aside from guest roles and supporting parts in Glee and The Politician, The Apology marks her very first time leading a TV series.
Netflix’s two-season order for The Apology coincides with sweeping executive changes and a 6 per cent workforce reduction. While film head Dan Lin departed on Monday and chief content officer Bela Bajaria was replaced by Peter Rice last week, head of scripted TV Jinny Howe has remained steady through the turnover.
