The World Series is a few days away, and the Atlanta Braves have time to look back at the 2026 season. The Braves have to decide if they can afford to lose him to another club.
Battery Power reported that the New York Mets have already shown interest in John Mallee as a hitting coach, but the focus for the Braves is on their own arms. He will want a deal that matches his work. The team has needs to address this offseason. Should the Braves target Seiya Suzuki or Randy Arozarena? That is the talk, but Bummer’s status is the real worry. If he walks, the left-handed depth takes a hit.
The Value of a Lefty in Atlanta
His ability to get left-handed hitters out was a major plus. The team cannot just let a guy like that go for nothing. He is a known commodity in a league full of unknowns. Other teams will see his stats and offer money. The Braves have to match that offer if they want to keep him.
Some might say the bullpen is deep. That is true, but depth does not replace experience. Bummer knows the pressure of playing in Atlanta. He knows how to work the zone. He does not need to be taught the ropes. Bringing in a new guy takes time. You do not have time during a playoff run. The cost of a new lefty might be higher than keeping Bummer. It is about risk. Do you gamble on a rookie or stick with the vet?
The Free Agent Battle Looms
The market for relief pitchers is always crazy. Bummer will get calls. He will get offers. The Braves have to be ready. According to Battery Power, several roster needs require attention this offseason. They cannot ignore the bullpen. If they let Bummer go, they need a plan. Do they sign a different free agent? Do they trade for one? Those moves take time and money. The clock is ticking even when the season is on hold.
If they think he is the guy, they make the offer. If they think he is replaceable, they let him walk. There is no middle ground. You either commit to the player or you move on. Hesitation kills deals. The Mets are watching. Other teams are watching. The Braves cannot wait until the last minute to act.
Looking at the Farm System
The future looks bright with young arms like Briggs McKenzie. He signed for $3 million as a fourth-round pick in 2025. He moved fast through the system. Only four pitchers from that high school draft class reached High-A this year, and he was one of them. In 2026, McKenzie stands as the youngest pitcher among premier prospects. He even threw in a game at age 19. That is rare.
He likes Nolan Ryan and the way he attacked hitters. He said, “I was kind of an old school guy, so I always liked Nolan Ryan, the way he attacked.” He also noted, “Being a lefty, I dropped my arm slot a little more when I got here. I wanted to kind of have similar shapes and stuff.” This is the kind of talent that could replace Bummer in the future. But you cannot count on a kid to save you today. You need Bummer now. The farm system is a backup plan, not a savior.
They have to weigh the cost against the risk. If they keep him, they get a steady hand. If they let him go, they hope the kids are ready. The World Series starts on the night of October 23.
