AIDA workshop explores BSF technology in Nagaland
১৫/১০/২০২৬

Dimapur, October 15 (MExN): The ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA), in collaboration with Eclose GmbH, hosted a one-day workshop under the Waste Insect Nexus for Growth & Sustainability (WINGS) initiative at the AIDA campus in Dimapur on October 15. The event focused on exploring Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology for circular bio-waste management in Nagaland, convening government officials and representatives from social and educational institutions for knowledge-sharing. The workshop was graced by the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Dr Tinojongshi Chang, NCS, as the Chief Guest. The inaugural programme commenced with an invocation by Dr Bibiana Lungbila, HR, Director Programmes, AIDA, followed by the lighting of the lamp and a special musical presentation by AIDA staff. Rev Fr Dr Roy George, SDB, Executive Director and Chief Functionary of AIDA, delivered the welcome address. Addressing the gathering, Rev Fr Dr Roy George emphasized that organic waste poses a significant challenge in towns and villages, and if unmanaged, contributes to pollution and strain on disposal systems. He noted that BSF larvae can convert suitable organic waste into valuable protein-rich biomass for animal feed and agricultural residues, supporting a circular economy. He added that AIDA has established six BSF facility centres across Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam to demonstrate the technology's potential. Chief Guest Dr Tinojongshi Chang highlighted that waste generation is a critical issue that needs urgent attention. Referring to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, he cautioned that strict directives mandate penalties for individuals and officials alike if waste management protocols are neglected. Chang requested AIDA to extend the initiative to the grassroots level and urged the Agriculture and Allied Sectors, along with municipal departments, to take the project forward through collaboration. Dr Stefan Diener, Co-Founder and CEO of Eclose GmbH, expressed his appreciation for AIDA's preparation and understanding of BSF technology. He noted that the WINGS initiative successfully addresses organic waste challenges while creating economic opportunities across Africa, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. Presenting statistics from the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), Waste Management Consultant Adrian M Mahung stated that Dimapur generates approximately 101.6 metric tons of waste daily, of which 49 metric tons is organic waste. He detailed a successful pilot phase in Ward 15 achieving 95% efficiency through decentralized wet waste collection and source segregation. He advocated for a decentralized approach to BSF technology in collaboration with AIDA to alleviate pressure on the city's overloaded dumpsite. During the event, AIDA’s Annual Report 2025–2026 was released by Chief Guest Dr Tinojongshi Chang, while the AIDA Chronicle, commemorating 40 years of the organization's establishment, was released by Dr Stefan Diener. The Chief Guest and participants also visited the WINGS facility at AIDA to witness the practical applications of BSF technology. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Jerome Mangkung, Project Manager of AIDA–WINGS, followed by technical sessions and institutional stakeholder dialogues.
