Ekiti state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has disengaged all directors-general of government agencies and technical advisers serving in his administration as part of a fresh shake-up ahead of his second term in office.
The decision, which takes immediate effect, was announced on Tuesday in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Olayinka Oyebode.
The affected officials have been directed to submit their handover notes to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government to facilitate the transition following the end of their appointments.
However, the government clarified that a few officials would retain their positions because of the nature of their assignments, although it did not identify those whose appointments had been preserved.
The latest disengagement comes barely 24 hours after Oyebanji dissolved the State Executive Council, marking another stage in the reorganisation of his administration ahead of his inauguration for a second term on Friday, October 16.
Completion of disengagement process
According to the statement, the latest decision completes the disengagement process for political appointees serving in the administration, except for officials whose appointments have been retained in view of the nature of their responsibilities.
“The disengagement, which came barely 24 hours after the dissolution of the State Executive Council, marks the completion of the disengagement process for political appointees serving in the administration, except for a few whose appointments have been retained in view of the nature of their assignments,” the statement said.
Oyebanji thanked the affected officials for their support, commitment and contributions to his administration and the development of Ekiti State.
He also wished them success in their future endeavours, acknowledging their service during their time in government.
The governor’s decision follows an earlier round of changes announced on September 27, when he dissolved the boards of government agencies, commissions and parastatals and terminated the appointments of political aides.
The successive decisions have affected several categories of political appointees as the administration prepares for a new term.
Although the government did not announce the immediate appointment of replacements, the disengagement creates room for the governor to determine the composition of his team for the next phase of his administration.
Second term begins October 16
The latest development comes as Oyebanji prepares to begin his second consecutive term following his victory in the June 20 governorship election.
The All Progressives Congress candidate won the election with 319,224 votes across Ekiti State’s 16 local government areas, defeating his closest challenger, Oluwole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party, who secured 40,543 votes.
Oyebanji’s re-election marked a significant milestone in the state’s political history, making him the first incumbent governor in Ekiti State to win a second consecutive term.
His inauguration is scheduled for Friday, October 16, when he is expected to begin another four-year tenure.
The disengagement of directors-general, technical advisers and other political appointees forms part of the administrative changes preceding the inauguration.
The governor is expected to continue with the process of determining the personnel who will serve in his administration as he prepares to implement his agenda during the new term.
The affected officials have been instructed to complete the handover process in line with the directive issued by the state government.
