Former US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle has rejected allegations concerning her conduct, finances, and use of her diplomatic post.
She announced her resignation on X, stating: “The allegations are false and I will vigorously defend my name, reputation, and integrity.”
The State Department is reviewing complaints through the Inspector General. Reports cite possible substance misuse, unauthorized private jet and helicopter travel, improper acceptance of gifts, and ties to business interests.
Athenian Club incident and unpaid bill
One widely reported episode involved Guilfoyle and her son at the Athenian Club, a historic private venue in Athens with a strict dress code. According to Kathimerini, staff told her that her attire did not comply. She is said to have reacted angrily, using an English expletive beginning with “F.”
A Daily Mail report claimed a restaurant bill remained unpaid and was sent to the US embassy. Shortly before her departure and ahead of Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Greece, Guilfoyle reportedly asked State Department officials to intervene and have the article withdrawn. Officials requested proof of personal payment, which was not provided. The story remained online.
Vodka investment and business ties
Questions have also been raised about her commercial activities. During her confirmation process she is reported to have secured a $3 million investment from a Greek businessman in Polished Rice, a vodka company she founded in 2025. A VIP launch planned for 2 July 2026 in Greece did not proceed as scheduled after bottles arrived broken, resulting in a legal dispute with the bottling firm.
Page Six examined her relationship with Christos Marafatsos, a Maryland-born lobbyist for the Greek construction company Aktor Group. The report claimed Guilfoyle favored the firm over competitors and that Marafatsos attended official meetings so frequently that some foreign officials regarded him as her chief of staff.
TV comments on alleged debts
On Greek television, Anthi Voulgari said she had heard unconfirmed reports that Guilfoyle was leaving while owing money. Co-host Iordanis Hasapopoulos asked whether this referred to outstanding bills. Voulgari replied affirmatively, citing services such as hairdressing and other personal expenses, while stressing the information was second-hand and might have other explanations.
The remarks came amid ongoing discussion of Guilfoyle’s removal from the US embassy in Athens.
