The criminal case against Armenia's second president Robert Kocharyan and his son, Sedrak Kocharyan, regardless of its groundlessness and illegality, concerns exclusively financial charges, but there is no rationalization for the risk of obstructing the investigation. This is stated on the Telegram account of the opposition Armenia Alliance.
The post adds as follows: “Let us explain. The basis of the case is financial documents, which, in fact, have already been seized, deciphered and studied.
Now the question is: how can the regulations in force at the time, bank statements, documents of the Cadastre Committee, published government decisions or the ratifications made by the president in accordance with the established procedure be changed after 15, 20 or 25 years?
Prosecutor Tsovak Mnatsakanyan and investigator Smbat Mkhitaryan have not yet publicly explained how exactly the Kocharyans can obstruct the investigation, and why it is necessary to keep them in [pretrial] detention.
Since 2022, in addition to detention, numerous alternative measures of restraint have been provided, and only in the presence of specific grounds excluding their application can the matter of detention be discussed.
To date, no data, no facts, or even a reasonable assumption have been presented that would justify why the application of other measures of restraint has been excluded.
On October 22, the hearings postponed yesterday will take place at the Anti-Corruption Court. The court will examine the motions of the prosecutor's office to extend the two-month illegal [pretrial] detention of the father and son Kocharyans.
The hearing regarding Robert Kocharyan will take place at 16։30, presided over by Judge Vardges Stepanyan.
Address: 3/9 Tbilisyan Highway.”
