For most of this cycle, Bitcoin has been the lead singer and everything else has been the backup band. According to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost, the backup band has quietly been getting louder since late August.
In findings shared on October 18, 2026, Darkfost reported that small- and mid-cap crypto assets have grown their market capitalization faster than Bitcoin over that stretch. He also said they outran the large-cap names that usually trail just behind it. He called the pattern “fairly unusual.”
What the numbers show
The metric Darkfost tracked compares each segment’s monthly average market cap against its annual average. When the monthly figure pulls well above the annual one, that segment is running hotter than its own long-term norm. It measures momentum relative to a segment’s own history rather than raw size.
On that basis, small- and mid-cap assets posted 41% growth in the ratio since late August. Bitcoin’s ratio rose by 7% over the same window.
Large-cap assets, the established names sitting below Bitcoin in the rankings, managed just 3.5%. That leaves the biggest non-Bitcoin assets trailing both the market leader and the smaller tokens.
The findings spread quickly after Darkfost posted them. Outlets including Cointelegraph and KuCoin picked up the analysis shortly after release, which pushed the idea of a possible shift in market momentum into wider circulation.
Why this breaks the usual script
The reason Darkfost flagged the trend as unusual comes down to how crypto recoveries have typically unfolded. Bitcoin has traditionally led the way out of downturns, with capital flowing into the largest and most liquid asset first. That pattern was especially visible after the 2023 bear market.
Darkfost paired the observation with a clear warning. He stressed that smaller-cap assets are highly sensitive to shifts in market sentiment and capital flows, and that the trend is vulnerable to rapid reversals.
What this means for traders and the market
When capital moves toward smaller assets, it often signals growing appetite for risk among market participants. A 41% momentum reading for small and mid caps suggests that, at least since late August, more traders have been willing to look beyond Bitcoin.
The weak showing from large caps is arguably as interesting as the strength in smaller names. A 3.5% ratio increase trails Bitcoin’s 7%, suggesting the segment that usually sits between Bitcoin and the long tail has been squeezed from both sides.
Darkfost’s data covers a window beginning in late August, which is a relatively short period by market-cycle standards. The comparison against annual averages helps filter out some noise, but it does not guarantee the momentum will hold, particularly given his own caveat about how quickly sentiment-driven moves can unwind.
