Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has called on digital platform operators to improve transparency in their use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the management of algorithms to safeguard the public's rights.
With greater transparency from platform operators, users can better understand how content is generated, displayed, and distributed across the digital platforms.
“While AI can assist the public in searching for and understanding information, its outputs are not always accurate,” said Secretary of the Ministry's Directorate General of Digital Space Oversight, Mediodecci Lustarini, in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
Therefore, she added, critical information must still be cross-checked against credible sources, especially when it involves government policy or allegations against specific parties.
As AI technology advances and becomes capable of generating human-like opinions, including through automated accounts or bots, transparency in managing platform-based AI services has become increasingly vital.
The ministry also stressed the importance of labeling AI-generated content, providing clear justifications for content moderation or restrictions, and ensuring user-friendly complaint and appeal mechanisms.
These steps are deemed vital to safeguarding the public's right to receive information, express opinions, and choose the content they wish to access.

As for content moderation, she highlighted that the enforcement is carried out based on evaluations of whether the content violates regulations or harms the public.
“Criticism of the government is a form of free expression and must not be treated as a violation simply due to a difference in perspective,” Mediodecci explained.
Addressing allegations of social media restrictions regarding forest and land fires, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs stated that it has never requested digital platforms to take down or restrict content related to the fires.
In light of these allegations, the ministry urged platforms to provide transparent explanations whenever users experience restricted content reach, including when such limits stem from community guidelines enforcement or algorithmic recommendation systems.
Following widespread concern over responses from the generative AI tool Meta AI, which were linked to alleged wildfire content restrictions, the ministry has requested clarification from Meta.
Mediodecci explained that answers generated by AI chatbots cannot be immediately regarded as an official company statement, let alone as proof of allegations without verifiable confirmation.
The ministry encourages the public to adopt a "trust but verify" approach—leveraging AI while continuing to cross-check sources, compare information, and refrain from sharing unverified AI outputs.
Regarding algorithmic and AI transparency, the ministry has urged AI developers in Indonesia to uphold these principles through ministerial circular No. 9 of 2023 on artificial intelligence ethics.
The guidelines emphasize the importance of transparency, security, credibility, accountability, and user rights protection in the development and deployment of AI technologies.
The government is also preparing to strengthen national AI governance through the draft Presidential Regulation on AI Ethics and the National AI Roadmap 2026–2029.
