Rylan Clark complains about his BBC Radio 2 salary and says bosses 'had a go at me' for missing show when his flight home was cancelled

Rylan Clark has complained about his BBC Radio 2 salary and said bosses 'had a go at me' for missing his show following a travel disaster.

The presenter, 37, hosts the Saturday afternoon slot on Radio 2 from 3pm to 6pm alongside other BBC commitments including hosting Eurovision and his popular travel show Rob & Rylan's Grand Tour.

However, in June, Rylan was forced to miss his radio show after his Saturday morning flight home from a holiday was cancelled.

Speaking on Alan Carr's Life's A Beach podcast, Rylan said: 'I was stranded in Nice, ain't it terrible? What a terrible place to be stranded, in the south of France.

'It was terrible. It was my own fault, like, radio have had a right go because, me being me, I was like, "I'll just fly home on the morning of my show".

Proceeding to have a go at the BBC over his salary, he quipped: 'It weren't my fault there was a French air traffic control strike. What am I supposed to do? Walk? P*** off, for the money they pay me. Thank you licence payers.'

Rylan’s exact BBC salary is not publicly disclosed because he is contracted through an external commercial production company rather than directly by the broadcaster.

Though his specific Radio 2 portion is private, Rylan's total earnings with his performing arts company Rylan Limited, brought in £1.4 million according to the latest records at Companies House.

BBC Radio 2 presenter salaries fall within £178,000 to £520,000 with Zoe Ball being the highest-paid host for the Breakfast show.

Vernon Kay reportedly takes home a staggering £405,000 while Jeremy Vine earns around £270,000 for his lunchtime current affairs and phone-in programme.

The Daily Mail has contacted BBC representatives for comment.

At the time of Rylan missing his show, Mark Goodier had to step in to cover with the presenter taking to Instagram to inform fans.

Rylan said: 'Soz about today's show. I blame everyone but myself. Genuinely had it all sussed out and then flights all cancelled. Thanks Mark for stepping in you legend. Gonna have a rosé and think of you all.'

He also rang Emma Willis during her show and told her: 'Decided to go away with my partner and a couple of friends to Nice for a few days and enjoy the sun. I didn't have work this week I managed to clear my diary.

'I was flying back very early this morning, went to the airport and it was like 'no!'. At one point I was going to get on an eight-hour train which I still would have been late for work but I would have got home today. But in the end I thought I would stay for another day.

'I'm not going to be able to make the show today but the lovely Mark Goodier is going to step in. I've just had a nice rosé with some ice cubes in it.'

It comes after last week Rylan was asked if he regretted telling his husband he had cheated on him as he addressed it for the first time in a new interview.

The presenter revealed his infidelity to his husband, Dan Neal, which caused the downfall of his six-year marriage back in 2021.

And now he has taken the hot seat on The Assembly, which sees famous faces answer unfiltered questions.

One audience member asked him: 'When you told your husband you cheated on him, he divorced you. Is honesty always the best policy?'

Stunned, he replied: 'Yeah, I think it is. I'm okay admitting I'm in the wrong, because actually I don't deal well with guilt, and I don't deal well with secrets.

'It made me so ill, like so ill. It sounds a terrible thing to say, but I'm glad it happened.'

Rylan was then asked: 'What do you miss about Dan, if anything?' to which he responded: 'Do you know, I never think about him.'

Speaking about his breakdown that followed, he said it was truly like the feeling of having the 'rug pulled from under you'.

'That's the only way I can describe it. It's like someone went like that, and I fell over, and I couldn't get back up. [It was] like I broke both my arms and legs.

'I thought I wasn't going to get out of it. I went back to live with my mum because I didn't want to be in my house, because there were too many memories of things in there.'

Speaking about the split on his podcast Rylan: How to Be in Love with Stephen Fry last year, he said: 'We got married in 2015.

'That same year, yeah. So it would have been my 10-year anniversary this year.'

Stephen then asked if Rylan felt any kind of responsibility to represent gay marriage, as one of the few public LGBTQ+ celebrities.

He asked: 'But did you feel also that - when it broke up and you were divorced – did you feel that there was in some sense you were letting down the idea of gay marriage, because we have a duty to show that our marriages are as robust and strong as any heterosexual?'

Rylan said: 'There was part of me that just felt like a complete and utter failure. I felt like I'd failed personally, but I felt like I'd found publicly on behalf of - the gays! You know, I'm not, I’m not ‘head gay’, it's not that.'

Stephen reassured: 'No, you're not, exactly. You’re not a poster child for gayness.'

Rylan continued: 'But you do feel like, yeah, I’m going to get married, I want to get married, I can get married.

'But when it doesn’t work out, you don’t want people to go, "you see that’s why they f****** shouldn’t get married".'

Stephen was quick to insist: 'You can get married again if you want…,' causing Rylan to hint at his divorce struggles as he quipped: 'Yeah, with a prenup this time, I’m not going through that again.'
