Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) remains one of the most efficient energy sources for daily meal preparation across Nigerian households. Many families buy extra cylinders to store gas at home so that sudden price hikes or unexpected cooking gas shortages will not catch them unprepared.
However, storing cooking gas cylinders for long periods can lead to hidden internal problems. Over time, heavy oily residues, impurites, and liquid condensates settle at the very bottom of the container.
In this article, Tribune Online examines five clear warning signs that show your stored cooking gas cylinder has accumulated dangerous sludge buildup.
Yellow or orange flame instead of clear blue
A clean and properly working gas cylinder delivers a steady, bright blue flame to your stove burner. When heavy oily sludge builds up at the bottom of a stored tank, it mixes with the gas vapor and flows upward into the burner heads.
This contaminated flow starves the stove of clean oxygen and causes incomplete combustion. Instead of a sharp blue flame, your cooker will start producing a lazy yellow or deep orange flame that burns inefficiently and turns your cooking pots black with soot.
Sputtering flame and sudden pressure drops
If your stove burner sputters, flickers, or loses pressure while the cylinder is still heavy, sludge could be clogging the internal flow. Liquid gas evaporates easily, but heavy oil residues do not convert to vapor at room temperature.
When this thick residue reaches the valve stem or regulator opening, it partially blocks the gas passage. The obstruction limits the smooth flow of vapor, leaving you with weak heat even when your cylinder feels half full.
Dark oily stains around the regulator and hose
Thick residue inside the tank does not always stay inside. As pressure pushes gas out during cooking, tiny droplets of oily liquid get carried into the rubber hose and regulator assembly.
According to technical safety guidelines published by the Nigeria Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association, users should regularly inspect gas hoses and regulator joints for oily moisture or unusual dark stains. If you notice sticky black grease dripping around your regulator nozzle, heavy sludge has penetrated your supply line and requires immediate cleaning.

Cylinder feels heavy but gas refuses to burn
A common trick many motorists and home cooks use to check gas levels is shaking or lifting the cylinder. When a cylinder collects years of heavy ends and oily sludge, that residue adds permanent dead weight to the bottom of the container.
You may pick up a stored cylinder expecting several weeks of cooking time, only to find the flame dies out after just a few minutes. The container remains heavy because thick liquid residue cannot vaporise to power your stove.
Persistent foul odor even after turning off the stove
Liquefied petroleum gas is naturally odorless, so refiners add a distinct chemical called ethyl mercaptan to help users smell leaks easily. Sludge and heavy residues absorb this odorant chemical over long periods of storage.
When sludge sits undisturbed in a stored cylinder, the smell becomes concentrated at the base. If a strong, pungent gas smell hangs around your storage area even when the valve is tightly locked, concentrated sludge residue is releasing foul vapors into the air.
What you should do if you suspect sludge buildup
Never attempt to tip a cylinder upside down or pour out leftover sludge into open gutters or domestic drains.
According to safety advisories issued by environmental protection agencies, pouring flammable LPG residues into public drainage creates severe explosion risks and damages community piping systems.
If your stored cylinder shows these signs, disconnect the regulator safely and take the tank to an accredited gas refilling plant.
Professional certified technicians use specialized vacuum suction tools to drain heavy residues safely without endangering your household or the environment.
