Dindigul Corporation on Thursday removed encroachments along the road margins in the city, as part of its anti-encroachment drive.
Dindigul Corporation Commissioner J. Prem Anand issued instructions to the officials to take necessary steps and remove the encroachments along the road margins. Following complaints of traffic congestion, instructions had been issued to the Corporation and the Highways Department officials to remove the encroachments.
As part of the drive, encroachments on AMC Road near Kamarajar Bus Stand were removed. A large number of police and Corporation officials were deployed to carry out the exercise. Roadside shops and their extensions such as extended roof structures were demolished.
An argument broke out between the shopkeepers and the authorities. However, following police intervention, the process continued. Some shopkeepers chose to vacate the premises on their own. Corporation officials said similar drives will be conducted across the city.
Earlier, the anti-encroachment drive was carried out along Corporation Office Road, Main Road, Kacheri Street. The officials demolished and cleared the structures installed in front of the shops which included walkways and the extensions.
Temporary shops that had been installed along the road margins were demolished. The Corporation officials said the encroachments had caused inconvenience to the public and resulted in traffic congestion.
The officials issued a warning stating that shops should not be set up along road margins. Strict action would be taken if there were any violations, the officials said.
