European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica has strongly condemned the Libyan House of Representatives’ ratification of the maritime agreement between Libya and Turkey, saying the deal violates the sovereign rights of third countries and contravenes the Law of the Sea.
In a statement posted online, Šuica expressed deep regret over the decision and voiced solidarity with Greece and Cyprus. She said the so-called Libya-Turkey Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Boundaries was invalid and legally void, and could not produce legal effects for third countries.
“I deeply regret the ratification of the so-called ‘Libya-Turkey Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Boundaries’ by the Libyan House of Representatives. I would like to express my solidarity with Greece and Cyprus,” Šuica said.
She added that the agreement violated the sovereign rights of third countries and failed to comply with the Law of the Sea.
“The agreement is invalid and legally void, and cannot produce legal effects for third countries,” she said, stressing that all EU member states’ sovereign rights must be respected in accordance with EU and international law.
