Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase won his small battle with the NFL this week.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Chase won appeals on both of his fines for his “people’s elbow” celebration, reverting the two fines of $14,926.
Beyond Chase’s appeal arguing that it was the NFL assuming the worst of him and Tee Higgins, the appeals office letter said this, via Rapoport: “On appeal, Mr. Chase … further contended that even if he committed the violation, his fine should be reduced because he received no warning that this was not allowed.”
Chase and Higgins did the gesture during the Bengals’ Week 2 win over the Houston Texans. Between the two, the NFL dished a total of $89,556 in fines to them.
At the time, Chase framed this as a situation in which the NFLPA needed to fight for the players’ money, so that’s how things turned out here. Whether this means the celebration is back on the table for the Bengals wideouts remains to be seen.
