The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, has warned officers against extortion, brutality, unlawful arrests and other acts of misconduct, stressing that violations of citizens’ rights will attract disciplinary sanctions.
Fatai gave the warning on Friday, during a general lecture for officers and men of the command at the POWA Hall, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos.
The lecture, held in compliance with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, brought together area commanders, divisional police officers, tactical commanders, heads of departments and other personnel from various units and divisions.
The police commissioner reiterated the IGP’s directives on professionalism, discipline, accountability and strict adherence to the rule of law, particularly in handling complaints bordering on police brutality, extortion, unlawful arrests and detention.
He charged officers to discharge their duties within the ambit of the law, respect fundamental human rights and conduct themselves in ways that would strengthen public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
The CP also warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for the conduct of personnel under their command, urging them to ensure strict compliance with established policing standards.
Fatai specifically cautioned tactical teams against extortion, intimidation, brutality, incivility and other dishonest practices, insisting that operational responsibilities must not be used as an excuse to harass or exploit members of the public.
On social media conduct, he directed personnel to comply strictly with the Nigeria Police Force’s Social Media Policy, warning that inappropriate online activities capable of damaging the image of the Force would attract sanctions for erring officers and responsible supervisors.
Addressing the menace of cultism, the commissioner urged officers to intensify efforts to tackle the crime while ensuring that arrests were conducted lawfully and in accordance with due process.
He prohibited arrest by proxy and the detention of individuals without lawful justification, stressing that crime-fighting operations must be guided by established legal procedures.
The CP further directed officers to safeguard the lives and welfare of suspects in police custody, ensure close supervision of detainees and guarantee their humane treatment throughout their detention.
On preparations for the 2027 general elections, Fatai charged officers to remain politically neutral and professional, directing them to monitor electioneering campaigns and provide adequate security to maintain peace and public order.
He also urged personnel to keep abreast of local and international developments, strengthen their professional capacity and remain vigilant against emerging security threats that could affect Lagos State.
The commissioner emphasised that public trust must be earned through integrity, impartial enforcement of the law, accountability and respect for the rights of every citizen.
