Balearic residents could save money on journeys across mainland Spain if calls to extend the islands’ existing travel subsidy to train tickets are successful.
The proposal would give eligible residents the possibility of receiving financial assistance for mainland rail journeys, rather than restricting the discount to qualifying air travel. However, the extension has not been approved, and there is currently no confirmed date for its introduction.
The Balearic Government is backing calls for the change, which could help islanders reach destinations that are no longer easily accessible by direct flight.
How would the proposed rail discount work?
Eligible residents of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera currently benefit from a 75 per cent discount on qualifying flights between the Balearic Islands and mainland Spain.
The subsidy can also apply to connecting flights within the country, subject to the applicable conditions. However, passengers who need to complete their journey by train must pay the standard rail fare.
Extending the discount to mainland rail travel could help bridge that gap, particularly for people whose final destination is not served by a convenient flight connection.
The proposal is being supported by Lorena del Valle, the Balearic Government’s director general for mobility, as reported by MajorcaDailyBulletin, who has highlighted the need to consider the practical consequences of changes to Spain’s transport network for island residents.
Why is the proposal being discussed now?
Changes to domestic flight connections have made the issue more pressing for some travellers.
León is one example, with flights from Madrid no longer available, while services to destinations including Zaragoza, Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela have also been reduced.
For Balearic residents travelling to these destinations, reaching the final stop may require a combination of air and rail transport. Although the flight from the islands may qualify for the residents’ discount, the onward train journey does not currently receive the same subsidy.
Supporters argue that extending the scheme could make these journeys more affordable and ensure island residents are not disadvantaged when they need to use different forms of transport.
Will residents get cheaper train tickets?
The Balearic Parliament has previously called for the residents’ discount to be extended to mainland rail journeys, but the proposal has not yet been implemented.
Spain’s Sustainable Mobility Law also aims to encourage rail travel instead of domestic flights on routes where the train journey takes less than two and a half hours. However, island residents face a particular challenge because they must first travel by air or sea to reach the mainland transport network.
An assessment of the economic and social impact of air transport subsidies is also required under the legislation. According to reporting on the proposal, the study had not been completed by October 2026.
The Balearic Government wants mainland rail travel to be considered as part of the wider review.
For now, the potential extension remains a proposal rather than a confirmed benefit. Residents should continue to check the conditions of the existing subsidy before booking, as there has been no official announcement confirming that discounted mainland train tickets will become available.
