Veteran ESPN host criticizes his own network on air over Troy Aikman's contract dispute

A potential shake-up in ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcast booth is becoming increasingly difficult for the network to ignore, particularly now that some of its most prominent personalities are openly questioning the situation.

Troy Aikman is approaching the final months of his five-year, $90 million contract, with no new agreement announced despite longtime commentary partner Joe Buck reportedly securing a six-year extension worth $108 million.

The uncertainty has prompted speculation that one of the NFL's longest-running broadcasting partnerships could separate after the season, even as the pair prepare to call ESPN's first Super Bowl.

Veteran ESPN broadcaster Michael Wilbon has now entered the debate, using his own television program to make an unmistakable case for retaining Aikman.

During Monday's edition of Pardon the Interruption, Wilbon delivered an unusually forceful endorsement of Aikman while closing the program alongside Tony Kornheiser.

"You know who calls a game better than Troy Aikman, knuckleheads? NOBODY calls a game better than Troy Aikman!" Wilbon declared.

His remarks came amid reports that ESPN has yet to reach a new agreement with the three-time Super Bowl champion, whose current deal expires after Super Bowl LXI.

Wilbon's intervention was particularly notable because the criticism came from within the network rather than from an outside commentator.

He was also joined in his support by Stephen A. Smith, who praised Aikman and Buck during an appearance on SiriusXM.

"They are the A team. Joe Buck, it don't get no better, play-by-play. Excuse the double negative. It's just the truth," Smith said. "I sincerely hope that we don't lose him as a person that's employed by ESPN."

Aikman acknowledges possibility of leaving

Aikman hasn't publicly announced plans to leave ESPN, but his recent comments suggest he is prepared to consider opportunities elsewhere.

Speaking on Dallas-Fort Worth radio station 96.7 The Ticket, the former Cowboys quarterback addressed his contract situation without committing to another season with the network.

"I'll broadcast through this season and I'll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens," Aikman said.

"I'm looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold and the Super Bowl and all that and where my next landing spot may be."

His comments followed a Front Office Sports report alleging that Aikman and Buck argued before the recent Buffalo Bills game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Although the reported disagreement has fueled speculation, neither broadcaster has confirmed that their partnership is ending.

ESPN faces difficult decision

Aikman and Buck joined ESPN from Fox in 2022, bringing an established broadcasting partnership that has now lasted 25 seasons.

Their arrival helped strengthen the network's NFL coverage, with Monday Night Football enjoying strong television audiences this season.

Former NFL tight end Greg Olsen has emerged in media speculation as a possible replacement, although ESPN hasn't announced any succession plans.

Former CBS analyst Phil Simms has also suggested the network may already be considering another candidate, without identifying who that might be.

ESPN now faces a significant decision before Aikman's contract expires following the February 14 Super Bowl.

Whatever the network decides, the prospect of breaking up one of football television's most recognizable partnerships is attracting attention well beyond the negotiating table.
