Women make up a small fraction of candidates seeking legislative seats in Katsina ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The final list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that only eight women will be contesting in the general elections in Katsina.
Jamila Abdu-Mani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is the only woman among the 104 candidates contesting seats in the House of Representatives across the state.
Ms Abdu-Mani was the immediate past Special Adviser to Governor Dikko Radda on Girl Child Education and will contest the Bindawa/Mani Federal Constituency seat under the APC.
Five women are among the 293 candidates listed for the state assembly election.
They include Hadiza Lawal, contesting Kankia Constituency under the African Action Congress (AAC); Maimuna Bala, contesting Katsina Constituency on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP); and Rahanatu Suleiman, also contesting Katsina Constituency under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Others include Hafsat Lawal, seeking election in Mai’adua Constituency on the platform of the NNPP, and Halimatu Umar-Machika, contesting Sabuwa Constituency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
At the senatorial level, two women were featured among the 23 candidates contesting the three Senate seats in the state.
They are Amajir Samaila, contesting Katsina South Senatorial District under the SDP, and Amina Lawal-Rafindadi, contesting Katsina Central Senatorial District on the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) platform.
The figures underscore the limited representation of women among candidates seeking legislative positions in Katsina ahead of the 2027 general elections.
