Pat McAfee addressed legendary coach Nick Saban when he went off about all the criticism he has received for his signature move on College GameDay.
Pat McAfee has become one of the most famous sports personalities in the country in recent years. He has become one of the faces of ESPN’s College GameDay as well, alongside fellow analysts like Kirk Herbstreit and legendary college coach Nick Saban.
One of McAfee’s signature moves on the show has been taking his shirt off upon urging from the crowds at the various college football games they go to. This weekend, the crew was in Salt Lake City, Utah ahead of the Utes-Cougars clash. Pat had a point to make, it would seem, and he addressed Saban while doing so.
Pat McAfee called out NYT again while taking his shirt off, jokingly saying sorry for ‘ruining the sport’
McAfee’s exuberance is what makes him endearing to a lot of fans, but it is also what has earned him some detractors. His tendency to create a spectacle out of himself has been criticised by some, including the New York Times, and there are those who would prefer for the focus to stay on the game.
It seems McAfee is not a fan of being called out. Because after he initially said he wouldn’t take his shirt off this time, that’s exactly what he did. He then threw a jab at NYT while talking to Saban.
“New York Times already saying it,” McAfee said during College GameDay. “This a****** is shirtless at 9:02 a.m. Eastern. Sorry, Coach. I’m ruining the whole sport. I’m ruining the whole sport because of this. I just enjoy it too much not to have a good time.”
McAfee is unlikely to stop doing what is clearly so popular among the crowds he performs most often in front of. His apology was obviously a dig at his critics more so than being genuine. This seems like a battle McAfee will be fighting for some time.
