(ANSA) - ROME, 13 OTT - Gaza is like the Romagna Riviera in terms of the low numbers of persecuted Christians there, a Marche councillor for Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party said Tuesday causing a furore.
"Compared to some parts of the world where Christians are persecuted, Gaza is like a beach on the Romagna Riviera," said Maria Grazia De Angelis—a Fratelli d'Italia city councillor in Ancona—during a debate on a motion she herself had proposed to defend Christians against persecution and massacres worldwide, sparking a protest by the centre-left opposition, who walked out of the chamber before the vote.
The centre-left Democratic Party (PD) said De Angelis had "mortified" the city council and her words allegedly playing down the alleged genocide in Gaza, which Israel firmly denies, were "disgraceful".
"I am talking about 13 Christians killed every day, thousands of children killed, women being made into sex slaves," De Angelis said in her defence in the chamber, speaking before the empty opposition benches about the parts of the world where Christians suffered the worst persecution. (ANSA).
